Some opportunities through the International Senior Lawyer’s Project:
Here is an array of ways to be involved with ISLP-UK, including projects in South Africa and Myanmar, an exciting new job, projects with organisations in India and Oxford, and wine-drinking on Thursday 13th November, with ISLP-UK staff and interns. Whether you are able to commit to a couple of minutes or months in support of ISLP-UK, there will be something here for you!
Fundraising:
On Saturday, 1st November Susan, James and I set off on an intrepid mission - to walk a 26.2 mile route from Tower Bridge to Hampton Court. We did 180,000 steps, saw the sights London had to offer, and developed blisters. Please sponsor us, to make this feat worthwhile! You can follow this link to our sponsorship page, and all funds will come to ISLP-UK. If you are a UK tax payer we can also claim gift aid on your donation, increasing it by 25%. Many thanks in advance!!
Interim Head Position:
An initiative between the Department for International Development and the International Pro Bono Community has been in development for some time, and the consortium organising this project are now seeking an interim head to lead the project. Entitled UK Legal and Judicial Expertise Programme (UKLJEP) the position is for 3 months, with a possible extension to 6 months. Attached to this email is the job description. If you do make an application for this role, we would be grateful if you let us know.
Applications, which should consist of a cv and covering letter demonstrating how you meet the job and personal specifications, need to be sent to binita.modi@iprobono.com by 5pm on 24th November, 2014.Interviews are to be held the following week.
ASF:
Advocats Sans Frontieres are looking for one or two pro bono lawyers with experience in developing and implementing training for one of their projects in Myanmar. The start date of the mission is 1st December, and the lawyers are expected to be in the field for 2-3 weeks.
Attached is the Terms of Reference provided by ASF with information on the profile sought, and the activities and objectives of the mission. Please contact us by 19th November if you are interested in this project.
Oxfam:
Oxfam GB are seeking a lawyer to work with their small legal team to provide pro bono assistance over the next three months commencing as soon as possible. This would suit a lawyer with general commercial transactional experience as it will entail drafting and negotiating contracts for fundraising, for supplies and ideally (but not necessarily) for IT. Oxfam's ideal would be a commitment to work 2 days a week in their Oxford office, with another 1 or 2 days a week from home (one day from home would be sufficient, two days amazing). If you would like further information on this role, please contact lhudson@islp.org
Register your interest:
Are you an experienced lawyer, preferably a litigator, with an interest in women's rights? Could you find time and funds this winter to spend some time in South Africa? If so, we could have the deeply rewarding project you are looking for.
The Women's Legal Centre (http://www.wlce.co.za/), an independent law centre that seeks to achieve equality for women in South Africa, is approaching its 15th anniversary. WLC has requested assistance from ISLP to conduct a review of its work to date and guidance for the future.
WLC focus on a wide range of issues facing women in South Africa which they tackle through strategic litigation and advocacy work. The volunteer would consult with various stakeholders (e.g. the community benefitted, founders, funders, partners, peers, law schools, staff) and draft a report (and potentially other related documents for different audiences) to include an analysis of effectiveness of cases brought and an evaluation of impact. This would include evidence of decisions being followed in subsequent cases; interviewing community beneficiaries to understand their perception of impact; speaking to officials at the court; and speaking with partner organisations to understand their perceived strengths. Are they focussing on the right areas (both from a socially relevant perspective but also from the perspective of funders)? Should they continue with all of them? Which clients should they take on and why? Overall time commitment would be a month. It is expected that some of this work could be conducted remotely, but at least a week would need to be spent in South Africa. (This time in country would most likely be centred in Cape Town - WLC has 16 or 17 staff members with about 7 in Cape Town, one in a new office in the Eastern Cape, the others being in Kwazulu Natal and Jo’burg.) The timing is quite tight because WLC would like this work completed by the time of their anniversary celebrations in February 2015, so please contact James Reynolds (jreynolds@islp.org) with any expressions of interest by Wednesday 19th November to find out more. Although WLC should have some funding to support some administrative aspects of the development of this project (particularly to cover publishing, editing etc.), there is currently no funding for this project (e.g. for volunteer travel or accommodation costs). However, if it would be prohibitive for you to take this on in the absence of funding support, please let us know so we can discuss options.
Dates for your Diary:
We will be hosting our next volunteer event on Tuesday 27th January, location to be confirmed. We will be reviewing our activity in 2014, and also looking ahead to 2015, and different projects we hope to run. It would be lovely to see as many of you as possible there.
ISLP have been invited to a wine tasting by Atlas Wines, our neighbours in Canary Wharf. They have agreed to offer places to our supporters at the corporate rate of £45. ISLP-UK staff and interns will also be in attendance on the evening. It will be held in Clifford Chance (10 Upper Bank Street, Canary Wharf, E14 5JJ) and is on Thursday 13th November, 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Attached is a poster with further details, and who to contact to buy tickets. Please let them know you are a supporter of ISLP-UK for the reduced rate.
